San Jose Gives it Away Against Kansas City

The team conceded two goals in 10 minutes against the 13th place in the west, Sporting Kansas City

Both teams approached the game with positive mindsets, buoyed by their recent victories. San Jose's 1-0 win against Chicago and Kansas City's road victory against FC Dallas in the US Open Cup semifinals set the stage for an optimistic clash.

All of the action began in the second half of the game. In the first three minutes, Alan Pulido scored the first of the night but was called offside. Soon, Erik Thommy was the man to put Sporting KC on the scoresheet after faking a shot from outside the box, the cutback, and sending the message to the left corner, where San Jose Keeper William Yarbrough could not find a way to block it.

Then, ten minutes later, in the 58', Alan Pulido came back into action, passing the Quakes defense after an assist by Nemanja Radoja inside the box to put Kansas up by two goals and mark Pulido's fourth goal of the season.

San Jose's opportunity to rescue came in the 83rd minute of the game when an own goal by Khiry Shelton put the Goons down by one goal, an impressive effort by San Jose's Jack Skaham, who sent a pass to Amahl Pellegrino shooting to goal and deflected by Shelton bouncing to the back of the net.

Ian Russell addressed the media after the match where he was asked about the approach of the game regarding his 5-3-2-1 scheme and how it is working so far.

"I think the back five helps you defensively, I just think we did not create chances to be dangerous" Russell said.

Also Coach Russell said what he could have done differently

"I feel like we'd get more pressure on the ball, their centerbacks have too much time and space, I think we were not too deep." Russell explained.

San Jose next game is midweek action on July 17 against Houston Dynamo at home and then goes on the road to Minnesota.
