Peru Eliminated from Copa América 2024 after 2-0 Loss to Argentina

Peru's 2024 Copa América campaign ended in disappointment with a 2-0 defeat to Argentina on Saturday, June 29, during the third matchday of Group A at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens, Florida.

The 'Blanquirrojo' finished their group stage with two losses and a draw, earning just one point and placing last in the group. This marks Peru's first group stage elimination from the tournament since 1995. Additionally, Jorge Fossati's team failed to score a single goal throughout the competition, a first in the nation's Copa América history.

Argentina secured victory with a brace from Lautaro Martínez, who scored in the 47th and 86th minutes. Despite the absence of their star player Lionel Messi due to injury, Lionel Scaloni's team completed the group stage with a perfect record, winning all three matches and advancing to the quarterfinals as group leaders.

Argentina will face the second-place team from Group B, which will be determined on Sunday, June 30. Potential opponents include Venezuela, Ecuador, and Mexico. The quarterfinal match is scheduled for Friday, July 4, at 8:00 p.m. (Peru time) at NRG Stadium in Houston, Texas.

Peru will now turn their focus to the 2026 World Cup Qualifiers, where they will face Colombia and Ecuador in September on matchdays 7 and 8, respectively.

In another decisive Group A match, Ricardo Gareca's Chile was also eliminated after a goalless draw against Canada. The Concacaf team advanced to the next round and will face the first-place team from Group B.
