Kansas City Current 2-0 San Diego Wave FC

By Alonso Contreras

Kansas City Current delivered a composed and commanding performance to secure a 2-0 win over San Diego Wave FC, courtesy of first-half goals from Debinha and Lo’eau LaBonta. The visitors held firm under late pressure from the Wave and claimed all three points in a physically intense and end-to-end encounter.

First Half: Clinical Current Take Control

The match started at a high tempo, with both sides eager to assert dominance. It was Kansas City Current who struck first. After a warning shot from Debinha in the 13th minute, the Brazilian star opened the scoring in the 15th minute, calmly slotting past Kailen Sheridan following a well-constructed team move.

Just nine minutes later, Kansas City doubled their advantage from the penalty spot. Lo’eau LaBonta stepped up and confidently converted after a foul in the box, making it 2-0.

The Wave struggled to respond in the opening half, limited mostly to half-chances. Sheridan was called into action several times, denying both Chawinga and Hutton, but her saves weren't enough to inspire a comeback before the break.

The first half was also marked by several injuries and a flurry of fouls. San Diego’s Sheridan went down in the 27th minute, and Kansas City's M. Cooper had to be substituted due to injury in stoppage time. McCaskill picked up a yellow card for the Wave in the 33rd minute after a rash challenge.

Second Half: Wave Push, Current Hold

San Diego emerged from the tunnel with renewed intent, but Kansas City managed the game with experience and defensive solidity. Despite the Wave pushing hard in the final third, goalkeeper Lorena was in inspired form, making crucial saves to deny A. Leon, K. Ascanio, and Q. McMahon in a dramatic stoppage time flurry.

The Wave made several substitutions to inject pace and energy, including bringing on Ascanio, McMahon, and Barcenas, but couldn’t break through the Kansas City backline.

Physicality remained a theme throughout the second half, with multiple fouls disrupting the flow. Yellow cards and stoppages were frequent, adding to the frustration of the home side.
