Inter Miami CF Advances to Semifinal CONCACAF

By Alonso Contreras

In a thrilling encounter between two MLS heavyweights, Inter Miami CF staged a stunning comeback to secure a 3–1 victory over Los Angeles Football Club. The game was a showcase of star power, high-octane attacks, gritty defending, and individual brilliance—particularly from Lionel Messi, who finished with two goals and an assist. Despite LAFC taking an early lead, Miami rallied back with poise and control to dominate the second half.

First Half: LAFC Strike First, Messi Responds

The match kicked off with intensity as both sides sought to gain early control. LAFC started brightly and made their pressure count in the 10th minute when Aaron Long fired home from close range after a well-placed corner by Denis Bouanga. The goal stunned the home crowd, giving LAFC a 1–0 advantage.

Inter Miami gradually grew into the match, with Messi acting as the orchestrator. After several dangerous efforts—including a sharp strike from outside the box in the 27th minute saved by Hugo Lloris—Messi eventually found the back of the net. In the 35th minute, after intricate build-up play, Messi slotted a powerful left-footed shot into the top right corner to equalize 1–1, lifting the Miami fans into a frenzy.

The remainder of the first half was fast-paced, with both teams exchanging chances. LAFC looked to regain the lead through Cengiz Ünder and Bouanga, but Miami’s keeper Oscar Ustari was up to the task, making crucial saves. The teams went into halftime level at 1–1, with momentum slowly shifting in Miami’s favor.

Second Half: Tactical Control and Miami’s Dominance

The second half began with Inter Miami taking control of possession and tempo. LAFC showed early attacking intent, but Ustari continued his solid performance with key stops, including headers from Ryan Hollingshead and shots from Bouanga.

The turning point came in the 61st minute. After a Messi-driven sequence, Noah Allen curled a superb left-footed strike from outside the box into the bottom right corner, giving Miami a deserved 2–1 lead. Allen’s goal not only showcased his composure but also highlighted Messi's influence in dragging defenders and creating space.

Miami continued to apply pressure, and in the 84th minute, Messi sealed his brace from the penalty spot after Marlon Santos touched the ball with his right arm in the box. Messi converted with a calm strike to the middle right zone, making it 3–1.

Despite late substitutions from both sides and LAFC's attempts to claw back into the game—including shots from Holm, Hollingshead, and Bouanga—Inter Miami held firm. Defenders Maximiliano Falcón and Federico Redondo were instrumental in keeping the visitors at bay.

Final Minutes: Frustration and Flair

The final moments saw tempers flare, with LAFC picking up multiple yellow cards (Segura in the 90'+3 and Santos earlier in the 89th). Luis Suárez, who had an industrious game with multiple attempts, was booked late in stoppage time for a foul on Hollingshead.

Miami’s defense stayed organized during the closing stages, with key blocks and smart fouls to slow down LAFC’s rhythm. Oscar Ustari’s commanding presence in goal capped off a man-of-the-match-worthy display.

Key Performances

  • Lionel Messi (Inter Miami CF): 2 goals, 1 assist, countless magical moments. A masterclass performance that dictated the flow of the game.

  • Oscar Ustari (Inter Miami CF): 7 saves, including multiple from close range. Provided the backbone for Miami’s resilience.

  • Noah Allen (Inter Miami CF): Scored a decisive second goal, contributed defensively, and won key duels.

  • Denis Bouanga (LAFC): LAFC’s most threatening player, created chances and was involved in several key plays.

  • Aaron Long (LAFC): Opened the scoring but struggled defensively in the second half.

Conclusion

This match was a testament to Inter Miami’s resilience and their growing chemistry, particularly between Messi and Suárez. After going down early, they didn’t panic—instead, they leaned on their experience, adjusted tactically, and let their stars shine. For LAFC, the match will sting as a missed opportunity. Despite a strong start, they were ultimately undone by moments of magic and a well-drilled Miami side.

With this result, Inter Miami continues its strong campaign and proves they are serious contenders, especially when their veteran stars are clicking. LAFC, meanwhile, will need to regroup and find more consistency, especially in their defensive transitions.
