Colombia With a Five-Goal Feast

By Josue Lopez

In soccer where defensive agenda is more prioritized than offensive propositions, Nestor Lozano’s team is notable for its dynamic, joyful style of play and efficiency in set-piece play. “Los Cafetaleros” defeated Panama 5-0 at State Farm Stadium.

The first goal came in the seventh minute. A corner kick ended with a header by Jhon Cordoba, this between two defenders around him. The penalty was caused by a clumsy foul by goalkeeper Oscar Mosquera. John Arias, a Colombian midfielder, deflected the ball way too wide where Mosquera could have full control of it; however, he ended up committing a penalty that was well taken by no other than James Rodriguez.

The current “10”, in a set-piece play surprising the whole Panamanian roster, assisted Luis Diaz. The Liverpool attacker placed the ball to the net to have the third goal in the score, this at the 41st minute.  In short, the match was defined in the first half.

Far from holding back, Colombia continued threatening the opponent’s net. Between a scrambled play, Richard Rios placed the ball on the net from outside the box, this at the 70th minute. Finally, Juan Fernando Quintero, another of the players with more experience who entered in the second half, placed the ball in the area where Luis Diaz was fouled by Jose Angel Cordoba. Miguel Borja scored from the white spot placing the final 5-0 result.

Colombia will play against the winner between Brazil and Uruguay next Wednesday at Bank of America Stadium located in Charlotte, North Carolina.
